Caring for Your Skin After Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal has been around since the 1960s but it was not until the early 1980s that laser hair removal became essentially permanent. Today, laser hair removal is the preferred method of choice for many people as it helps to remove unwanted hair from different areas of the body and is virtually painless. Since your skin is your largest organ it is important to give it some TLC after laser hair removal. Here are some tips to keep your skin looking great:

Avoid the Sun – You will want to keep the treated area away from direct sunlight for a minimum of two weeks. Sunlight will irritate the treated area and may cause discomfort. Cover the area with clothing, avoid tanning booths, and if you do need to go outside, wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.

Use Ice Packs – If you are experiencing minor discomfort after your laser hair removal session, you can use an ice pack or cold pack to help ease the pain. Wrap the ice pack in a towel and treat the area for up to 10 minutes at least 3 times a day.

Avoid Topical Products – Within the first few days after laser hair removal, you should avoid using some topical beauty products.  Your skin will be very sensitive during the healing process and using beauty products can irritate the skin. This includes makeup, lotion, deodorant, and body washes.

Gently Exfoliate Your Skin – Exfoliating immediately after your session is a no-no, but in the weeks following, exfoliation will be helpful. In the weeks after your session, the hair follicles will be destroyed and begin to fall out. Exfoliation can remove the shedding hairs along with dead skin cells while helping to reduce the risk of ingrown hairs and dull, dry skin.

Take Cool Showers – Hot water can dry out and irritate your skin after a laser hair removal session. It is a good idea to take lukewarm or cool showers for the first few days after treatment. You should also avoid using hot tubs or saunas as well as things like heating pads and electric blankets during this time.
